“You cant get very far in life until you start doing something for somebody else”
Melvin Jones - Lions Club Founder

Thanks for visiting Westport Lions Club website and I would like to offer you a very warm welcome from all our members.
We hope our website gives you a brief outline about how we serve our community, locally and around the globe.

"WE SERVE" is not only the Lions motto but the philosophy that us members or "Lions" of Westport Lions Club have striven to adhere to over the last 32 years and will continue to do so into the future.

As a very new member to this organisation I am blown away with the service past, present and deceased members have given to Westport projects and international aid. Being a native of Westport I was very aware of the Lions Club in Westport, but I did not know exactly what they did. On finding myself in a position with more time on my hands and looking to give back something to the community I found myself at this very website and decided to contact the Westport Lions Club. I was welcomed by now retired President, Darren Cawley, to sit in at one of the monthly 1 hour meetings meeting to see what it was all about. Within 30 minutes, having observed the member profile of the club ( a 50:50 male:female ratio ranging from 30-80) and the banter between members (very interesting at times!) I decided this was the group for me. Little did I know I would be taking over the helm as President so soon and I am very honoured to do so.

We here at Westport Lions Club see our role as facilitators. There are many within our community, who through no fault of their own, be that illness, bereavement or economic necessity have simply fallen on hard times. We use the skills and resources of our members to tackle these issues, offering a prompt response and immediate solution where possible.

Westport is a thriving award-winning town in the west of Ireland and a lot of its success is down to community group collaboration. Based on this principle, along with supporting and growing well-established and new Lions Club initiatives, there are three focal areas which I hope to achieve in the role of President:

Building the Westport Lions Club profile to enable us to help others.
Increasing membership to ensure the Clubs future.
Diversity and inclusivity within our organisation and initiatives.

We believe that those who live in a community are in the best position to know who needs help and why. Therefore, we invite you to contact us to let us know of any issues you think we may be able to assist with.

My experience of being a Lion has been so positive. I have met new people, got to know ‘familiar faces’ better and formed new friendships. Most surprisingly I have discovered I love meeting people on the street when fundraising. So, if you have some extra time on your hands to help us we would love to hear from you. We are always open to welcoming new members. They bring in fresh ideas, energy, talents and skills, expanding our ability to make an impact. Typically, membership involvement includes attending the monthly meetings and helping out with initiatives such as organising parties for our senior citizens, food appeal collections, fundraising events – giving as much time as you can afford. If you are interested in finding out more, you are invited to contact us or sit in on our monthly meetings every second Tuesday of the month at 8pm at the Clew Bay Hotel.

We also invite you to browse through and like/follow our social media channels Facebook (Westport Lions Club, Mayo Ireland) and Instagram (Westport Lions Club) where you will find updates of all our Club’s activities.

Yours in Lionism,

Lion Tanya Whyte
